After finishing a PhD in 1997 at the University of Exeter, UK, I was a postdoctoral research fellow in the School of Computer Science and Electrical Engineering at The University of Queensland. I then held academic positions at the University of Skovde and Halmstad University in Sweden. I re-joined The University of Queensland in 2003. I am currently appointed by the School of Chemistry and Molecular Biosciences, and affiliated with the Institute for Molecular Bioscience. | My PhD is from the University of Exeter, UK, in computer science, AI and machine learning. I was a postdoctoral research fellow in the School of Computer Science and Electrical Engineering at The University of Queensland. I was a senior research fellow in the Institute for Molecular Bioscience before my current appointment as Professor at the School of Chemistry and Molecular Biosciences, both at UQ. I am the Director of Bioinformatics postgraduate programs. |

I am leading a bioinformatics research group, and we are working on a number of research projects, see [[research||here]] for the official info. | My research has been awarded funding from various grant agencies, including the Australian Research Council and National Health and Medical Research Council (see [[http://bioinf.scmb.uq.edu.au/research/|here]] for some official info). With biological data available at phenomenal scales, my group and I use data driven, probabilistic and algorithmic approaches to solve problems in genomics, systems and protein biology. Sequence analysis, regulatory genomics and phylogenetics are major themes in my group. We are also developing tools for exploring the evolution of proteins, with applications in protein engineering. We work closely with collaborators across the disciplines, including genomics, genetics, stem and developmental biology, biochemistry and structural biology. |
Our research aims to develop, investigate and apply bioinformatics methodologies to understand and resolve a range of open problems in genomics, molecular and systems biology. Recent applications involve protein sorting, nuclear protein organisation, mechanisms of transcriptional regulation, sequence and structure determinants of protein function and modification, and protein engineering. | |

Biological data are now available at scales that challenges our ability to process and analyse them. On the flip side, greater scale gives statistical power to distinguish biologically meaningful signals from mere noise or artefacts, i.e. to identify "drivers" and "determinants" of function and structure.
